The Friends of the Alhambra Foundation provides major boost to Granada’s ECOC 2031 bid
5 July 2025
The Friends of the Alhambra Foundation (Fundación Amigos de la Alhambra) has officially endorsed Granada’s bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2031. This adds a recently founded institution to Granada’s bid, but also one that is deeply rooted in the city’s heritage and cultural life.
Since its establishment in January 2024, the Foundation has placed the Alhambra at the centre of a cultural vision that not only reflects on the past but also looks to the future. The Foundation’s involvement in the bid is driven by a shared conviction: that Granada should strive to leave a transformative legacy for its citizens, and that the process leading up to the 2031 bid should serve to strengthen the relationship between heritage and society.
The Alhambra represents much more than a monument: it is a living symbol of what Europe stands for. Its walls enshrine centuries of shared history between civilisations, and for generations it has served as a meeting point for millions of visitors from cultures around the world. In this regard, the Alhambra is not just a symbol of Granada’s identity; it also reinforces the city’s role as a standard-bearer for heritage, coexistence and architectural beauty in Europe.
