The city of Granada has responded with enthusiasm and great participation to the cultural event held at the Fuente de las Batallas. The citizen action framed in the Granada 2031 project that has turned this emblematic space into a meeting point to reflect on the cultural future of the city.
The event began with the raising of the european flag, a symbolic gesture that launched a participatory day that brought together Grenadians and visitors around the artistic intervention “Beyond 2031”, a proposal that invites you to imagine the cultural legacy of Granada beyond its aspiration to be the European Capital of Culture.
The mayor of Granada said that “I start by thanking the public for their response and highlighting the value of this collective support at a key moment for the candidacy. Granada has shown today that this is a project for everyone. The city’s response drives us and fills us with enthusiasm to face with strength the next presentation of our candidacy in Madrid”, she noted.
During the event, driven by La LATERAL, alongside artist and professor Pedro Osakar and students from the University of Granada, 16 benches dedicated to different cultural disciplines were installed. Attendees were able to sit, symbolically "champion" one of these disciplines, and write down their ideas, reflections, and dreams for the city’s cultural future. Mayor Carazo further emphasized that “this highly participatory act demonstrates that Granada 2031 belongs to the entire city. We want to listen to our citizens and build together the cultural legacy that Granada deserves, not only thinking about 2031, but also about everything that will come after.”
The intervention transformed the Fuente de las Batallas into a living space for citizen participation. The day was entertained by DJ Sergio Torres Ramón, known artistically as Seio, whose session fused traditional Granada music with electronics, while the BASMOVE School of Urban Dance provided rhythm and energy with different performances.
Esperanza de los Reyes, representing La LATERAL, highlighted that “the installation perfectly sums up not only the broad and diverse cultural profile of our city, but also its enormous creative potential and the way in which we believe that the cultural future of Granada should be faced, by uniting knowledge and uniting citizens.”
The activity also featured volunteers who accompanied the participants and explained the artistic intervention, inviting passers-by to join this collective experience. All the contributions garthered during the day will be compiled into a memoir document that will include photographs, videos and a record of citizen messages, with the aim of preserving this shared reflection as part of the process of building the cultural legacy of Granada.
The successful participation experienced today at the Fuente de las Batallas once again shows the social support for the Granada 2031 candidacy, a few days before its official presentation in Madrid, reinforcing the idea that Granada's aspiration to be the European Capital of Culture is born out of the commitment, creativity and enthusiasm of the entire city.
