Granada and Victoria (Malta) make progress on joint projects for their ECOC 2031 bids
16 June 2025
Granada’s City Councillor for Culture, Juan Ramón Ferreira, held an institutional meeting today with representatives of the city of Victoria (Malta) to advance preparations for joint projects as part of both cities’ bids to become European Capitals of Culture in 2031. The European Union will select one Spanish city and one Maltese city to hold this prestigious title.
The online working session took place in a spirit of constructive dialogue and focused on shared cultural proposals, including residency programmes for artists and creative exchanges. The meeting also addressed the importance of gastronomy and folklore in the cultural strategies of both Granada and Victoria. Moreover, the cities agreed to move forward with the drafting of a joint document outlining the framework for this collaboration and its potential European scope.
The Councillor emphasised that Granada’s strategy draws on the experience and advice of cities that have already been designated European Capitals of Culture. The city is in contact with the representatives of previous successful candidates to learn first-hand about their successes and challenges, with a view to understanding how they developed robust cultural programmes with a European dimension.
This collaborative initiative aligns with the European Capital of Culture’s ethos of promoting artistic excellence and cultural exchange, cohesion, and understanding between European peoples.
